County Line Road at Carriage Way Drive/North Frontage Road Intersection

Challenge: Decrease congestion while enhancing safety
Solution: Re-alignment of the North Frontage Road (East) as well as changes to traffic control measures
Result: Significant mitigation of congestion during peak hours, improved safety

Milhouse led a team of consultants providing Phase I Preliminary Engineering Services to the Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways (CCDOTH) for a wide range of roadway and bridge projects.

After performing a technical analysis and getting input from stakeholders, Milhouse proposed improving the northbound congestion on North Frontage Road by accommodating a WB-65 design vehicle without encroaching on the opposing travel lane.

After implementing this solution in October 2019, it allowed for simultaneous left- and right-turning movements from North Frontage Road onto County Line Road. It also improved the operational characteristics and enhanced transportation throughout the area. Furthermore, there was no need to install additional traffic signals. As of January 2020, this solution has already been deemed sensitive and compatible with the values and land-use patterns of the local community.
